Hyundai Motor Corp. surprised everyone this year by making the biggest increase in automotive brand value and recognition. Hyundai for the first time ever beat such marques as Porsche, Lexus, and Nissan. Honda and Toyota are now forced to take Hyundai more seriously as it is now closing in on them at a rapid pace. According to J.D. Power and Associates, Hyundai has one of the highest consumer satisfaction ratings of all vehicle manufacturers and its brand value has greatly increases after the introduction of their hot 2006 model lineup.

According to the 2006 Best Global Brands survey Hyundai Motor Company has emerged as one of the worlds leading brands with stellar levels of customer satisfaction that rival the best in the industry. Brandon Yea, Hyundai vice president for branding strategy, stated that Hyundai represents solid quality and representation at every level now as we have everything from the low end to our new entry into luxury sedans with the Alzerra. Hyundai is now being seen as a serious player in the automotive industry. While other automakers are worried about profits (GM and Chrysler), Hyundai is thinking about how much more market share it will take this year. The Alzerra was targeted at the Acura and Lexus luxury car markets and has shown great promise so far.

Apparently Hyundai has taken a page from Walmart founder Sam Walton, price yourself as aggressive as possible while providing what your customers want and need. Hyundai has out priced their competition and now sits poised to become, perhaps, the major automotive player similar to what Walmart did with its retail stores. According to the Harvard Business Review, Hyundai has the perfect business model and will be the automotive manufacturer to beat in the coming years. Large automotive dealership chains like Hendrick Automotive Group and Sonic are adding Hyundai dealerships as fast as they can be built.

Hyundai is not sitting on its laurels with the good news, however. They are investing heavily in research and product development. They are also planning and designing more competitive models. We have found great success in every product line we have been involved in and will continue to add to this. Our philosophy is similar to that of MDWholesale, one of our business partners. To provide the best value at the best price for our customers, stated Yea. GM and Chrysler will learn a lot about the car business from Hyundai, they don’t have a choice.

A few days back (yes guys, I have been sluggish) I was at the launch of the Honda Shine, HMSI’s (the other Honda..) new 125 bike. This is an important motorcycle for HMSI as this is the one that will bring in the bread…Unicorn and the scooters already bring in the butter. But at the launch I was a bit disappointed by the Shine. The bike is a good package.

There is nothing new or scintillating in the Shine, nothing that will make me sit up and take notice, nothing that will excite anything. With this bike HMSI has played it safe and just focussed on putting together a complete package.

And Shine? Couldn’t the whole of HMSI’s marketing department armed with their Mobile Centrino Laptops and Powerpoint presentations come up with a better name? How about Glitter? Heck, even the MC2 that HMSI dudes kept on using during the AV presentation sounded better.

I was actually hoping that it was the real name but my hopes disappeared with a poof of confetti.

Talking of the name, Shine was written in much the same font as Hero Honda writes Splendor. Has Honda run out of fonts?

Almost anyone can use power, but it takes skill to use leadership. Leadership skills are much more than the use of force. It means the ability to influence others and inspire them to truly wish to achieve a goal. Managers all over the world recognize the central role of effective leadership in organizational performance. Effective leadership is an imperceptible quality for a good manager. Leaders are capable not only to differentiate the results of their companies; they also can differentiate the satisfaction levels of the people working within these organizations. The abilities of a leader guarantee that the work of the organization is what it should be. Leaders are able to facilitate the definition of organizational purposes. They are initiators of the development of vision within their organization on the whole.

According to the last national research, getting along with the employees is the number one factor that influences job effectiveness (Blanchard 2007). It is important for managers working in organizations to think about their own experiences with employees to understand how essential the relationship of the leader-follower for organizational well-being is, as well as how irreplaceable is a good leader for satisfaction of a follower. Honda injected enthusiasm and energy into people around him and they helped him to achieve great things. Soichiro Honda was a transformational leader and working for him was a wonderful and uplifting experience. Leaders of this type have the ability to put passion and energy into everything. They care about you and want you to become successful.

A leader is essential for every organization. The function of a leader in the organization can be described as: ‘to define what you do, why you exist, and how you judge success’ (Hesselbein and Cohen 1999, p. 250). It is necessary to emphasize that powerful leaders have clear visions about their organizations and their purpose is not only to have clear vision, but also to involve and instill the same vision in other employees. The task of the leaders is to focus their attention and efforts on people because they have to encourage, influence, motivate, inspire, empathize, train, evaluate, and reward them to reach the desired results. Leaders are those people who can build organizations, create organizational cultures, and form our society.

With the Nikkei 225 Stock Average falling for a fourth day in June 27, Japanese stocks dropped extending the longest line of declines since early March.

Sony Corp. and Honda Motor Co. led losses on concern demand for their products will come to a halt, is limiting profit and accompanied by signs that the U.S. housing market is worsening.

Mitsubishi Corp. and other commodities-related shares decreased after prices of oil, copper, gold and other raw materials dropped.

Koshi Kumagai, a fund manager at BNP Paribas Asset Management in Tokyo which manages about $438 billion in assets globally, said that the U.S. housing market is worsening. He continued that global investors are now reviewing how much risk they are willing to take which is consequently causing shares to fall.

After the Nikkei newspaper reported that Toshiba Corp. won a power plant construction project worth nearly 600 billion yen ($4.87 billion), the company led gains by nuclear power-related companies. As increasing costs of raw material make the power generation method more appealing, orders for nuclear power plants have been increasing around the world.

As of 10:07 a.m. of June 27 in Tokyo, the Nikkei declined 127.99, or 0.7 percent, to 17,938.12. That represented the fourth day of losses and the longest string of declines since the five days wrapped-up on March 5. The Topix index – a broader one – fell 12.84, or 0.7 percent, to 1753.03.

Sony, the second-biggest consumer electronics maker in the world, dropped yen, or 1.1 percent, to 6,330. Honda Motor Co., Japan’s No. 2 automaker by sales and maker of Honda exhaust, dropped 80 yen, or 1.8 percent, to 4,320. And the largest, Toyota Motor Corp. lost 90 yen, or 1.2 percent, to 7,590.

The Commerce Department said in June 26 that acquisitions of new homes in the U.S. fell in May; cueing demand is still dithering in the second year of the housing slowdown.

To an annual pace of 915,000 last month, sales dropped 1.6 percent. Economists forecasted slow sales rate of 924,000. April sales figures were revised 5.2 percent lower. Consumer confidence also fell more than expected.

Furthermore, exporters fell as the yen strengthened. For a third day against the dollar, Japan’s currency climbed, recently trading at 123.05 yen, after falling to a more than four-year low of 124.14 on June 22. For a third day, the yen also gained against the euro to 165.30, from last week’s record low of 166.94.

In other Asian markets open for trade and exchange, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index dropped 0.5 percent to 6278.10. South Korea’s Kospi index also declined 0.5 percent to 1741.53. Taiwan’s Taiex index slid 0.3 percent to 8841.16.

I have recently been riding around on the Hero Honda Achiever, as part of my fun-job of an automotive writer for Hindustan Times. The Achiever is a good bike but is caught in the quicksand of mediocrity. It would have been a great bike about a year back but now with the Pulsar DTSFi just around the corner and the Honda Unicorn firmly established, the Achiever is nothing but a plug, a plug for the premium segment hole left in the Hero Honda boat, rocked by falling sales of the once-wonderful but now Triassic CBZ.

Sure, the styling is good but it looks done half-heartedly. The bike lacks the edginess of the Apache, the hormonic imbalance of the Unicorn and the swoopiness of the Pulsar. The engine is smooth but anything coming from the Unicorn’s womb would be. Sure the Achiever irons out all of CBZ’s deficiencies, but that is too little, a too late.

So will the Achiever sell? Sure! An average Hero Honda showroom gets as many footfalls as my neighbourhood mall and some of these should fall for the Achiever. But is the Achiever going to achieve anything? Nah!

Talking of Achiever using a Unicorn inspired mill, I am a bit confused about Hero Honda’s place in Honda’s plans. Or maybe I am not. Have you noticed that nowadays Hero Honda gets every design after Honda (or HMSI) has already used it beyond its use-by date.

The Achiever uses the Unicorn’s mill and the Pleasure uses more than that from the Activa. And with Honda planning to launch a new 125cc bike, the engine of which may then head to the next generation Speklndor and Passion, the sequence seems to have just started. From what I hear, the update on teh CBZ (yes, they will keep it) will also be powered by a mutation of teh Unicorn engine. I hope the Munjals have the vision for the day when the penetration levels of HMSI get close to Hero Honda’s

In this article we will analyze the approach to leadership taken by Soichiro Honda. Moreover, we will examine the environment in which Honda developed his leadership skills, his strengths and weaknesses as a leader as well as the components of his leadership style. ‘Many people dream of success. To me success can only be achieved through repeated failure and introspection. In fact, success represents 1 percent of your work which results only from 99 percent that is called failure.’ (Soichiro Honda, Michigan Technological University, 1974)

Failure is vital to the success. This is proven by a great innovator of all times – Soichiro Honda. The ability to risk is the essential feature of a leader who is not afraid to look into the future and make his dreams come true. It is necessary to stress that the best way to test an idea is not to analyze it but to try it. The person who implements many ideas is likely to have many failures, but the chances to become successful are high too. By trying something new shows the courage and the will-power of a person.

Many great successes started out as failures. Even if the failure does not lead directly to a success, it can be seen as a step toward the desired aim. Honda was the innovative leader who encouraged a culture of experimentation. He always remembered the day when being a small boy he ran after the first motor car he ever saw. He was excited by it and dreamt of his own car. At that time he could not even imagine that he would become the owner of a whole corporation. From the very childhood he was taught to work hard. Since then, he never stopped on the way towards his dream. Leadership is intended to make things happen in organizations. It means that without leaders it will be difficult for an organization to achieve their goals. Bennis and Nanus (1985, p. 21) stress that ‘leading is influencing, guiding in direction, course, action, opinion’. Leadership is determined as a process of influencing individual and group behavior to get some necessary results.

The Honda Civic SI has always been a sporty little car, good on gas and great for reliability. Well, maybe not always. The first Honda Civic SI models were fair at best, but in a very short period they got better and better. Today, as of 2006, Honda Civic SI is enjoying its 20th birthday, and is better than ever.

All Honda Civic models have made some leaps forward in their 2006 models, including the Honda Civic SI. The first and most obvious change is the overall design and frame. The exterior has become a whole sleeker and more modern looking, without being cheesy or bubble like. Even though I’m a fan of cars that have a more classic look, the slick cutting edge appearance of the 2006 Honda Civic SI is really sharp.

The engine in the newest Honda Civic SI has also been given a serious upgrade. It’s been boosted up to a 197 horsepower, 2 liter i-VTEC engine, which given the overall low weight of the car gives it a whole lot of zip. Honda Civic SI’s have been noted for their ‘zip’ in the past, making novel racecars with a little modification, but this newest model hardly needs to be modified. With an amazingly tight turning radius, good balance and low center of gravity, the Honda Civic SI handles beautifully even at fairly high speeds.

Even with the increased power, the new Honda Civic SI model retains the same fuel efficiency of its predecessors, getting around 31 MPG on the highway, and 22 MPG in cities. It is also a certified low emissions vehicle, so the Honda Civic SI is not only fun and sporty but environmentally friendly as well.

The inside of the new Honda Civic SI is also looking sleeker and more modern than before. Like other new Honda Civic models, the Honda Civic SI now comes with the option of having a satellite navigational system. I find this feature especially handy; even though the technology is still in a somewhat early stage, it’s a great tool to have if you drive in unfamiliar areas a lot.

The Honda Civic SI is overall a very good car for its price tag. The advances to the 2006 model have made it something of a phenomenon, and it has been receiving a lot of high praise from car reviewers. Of course, it is a two-door vehicle, so it suffers from the same space limitations as the previous versions, but if that isn’t a problem for you then you should take a serious look at the Honda Civic SI if you’re looking for a new car.

The first generation Honda Accord was launched in 1976 as a two-door hatchback with 68 horsepower (51 kW), a 93. Honda chose the name Accord, reflecting “Honda’s desire for accord and harmony between people, society and the automobile. It has achieved considerable success, especially in the USA, where it was the best-selling Japanese car for 15 years (1982-97), and became the first Japanese-branded vehicle to be manufactured in the US. The Accord became the first Japanese car to be produced in the US in 1982, when production commenced in Marysville, Ohio at Marysville Auto Plant where cars were produced and exported back to Japan. The Honda Accord has been sold in most automotive markets throughout the world. The European Honda Accord, also made in Sweden, became very different from its cousins in terms of styling, and was also shorter than the JDM and USDM Accords.

The Car

The Accord was originally planned to be a V6-powered car with a long hood and sporty pretensions. Vastly improved quality control, however, made this one of the most reliable cars on the US market, a position it still holds today. This was one of the first US production cars to feature optic reflectors with completely clear lenses on the headlamps replacing the more conventional sealed beam styled lighting. A little-known fact about the 1998 Accord was that it was assembled in New Zealand at the very end of overall New Zealand CKD car production (due to changes in tariffs for car importation in that country). Now a vastly different car to the worldwide Accord, the North American model grew larger still, gaining more interior room and weight than its international counterpart. The American Accord was only available in sedan and coupe form, becoming the largest Accord to date

The Next Generation

For the first time, Honda offered an “enthusiast” version of the Accord in the US, adding a sports suspension and mating the 6-speed manual transmission from the Acura CL to the V6 Honda Accord Coupe. Modernizing both the interior and exterior, the second generation Accord was mechanically very similar to the original, using the same 75 hp (56 kW), 1751 cc EK1 CVCC engine. Honda introduced the Insight, America’s first hybrid vehicle still the fuel economy leader, in December 1999. Honda then took hybrid technology into the mainstream with the introduction of the Civic Hybrid in March 2002.

The 2006 Honda Accord Hybrid, in only its second model year received a number of improvements including exterior updates to further differentiate the Accord Hybrid from other Accord Models. Honda presented to the world the exciting Accord Tourer Concept and the new generation of Honda diesel engines, i-DTEC at the 2007 Frankfurt motor show. In 2008 the Honda Accord was completely redesigned, boasting more power and passenger space. In real-world use, however, the car’s fuel economy was disappointing and people balked at its higher price.

In Conclusion

In reviews, it has been found that the latest Honda Accord continues to excel as a family sedan or midsize coupe. Consumers interested in a Honda Accord but limited to a smaller budget could also check out the fourth-generation Accord, which was available starting in 1990. However, the Accord has matured into a larger car now approaching the likes of the Ford Taurus, but is still given “compact” status. Honda sold the North American Accord in a few other markets including Asian (now made in Thailand), Middle Eastern, Caribbean, Australian and New Zealand markets with mixed results.

When examined from a holistic standpoint, it’s easy to see why this Honda car has become an automotive icon and one of our editors’ top recommendations.
