The founder of Honda Automobiles, Soichiro Honda, was born in 1906. He grew up helping his father repair bicycles in the little town of Komyo. At 16, he headed to Tokyo, 270 kilometers away, to take an apprenticeship at an automobile repair shop. He took up racing and, after a violent crash, he was convinced by his wife to retire from the sport. The repair business alone was not enough to keep him occupied. Soichiro Honda did much of the market research for his products. This research went as far as traveling to races all over the world and examining the competition’s motorcycles. 2007 Honda Accord

Honda’s VTEC variable valve lift and timing system ensures optimum performance at all engine speeds, and there is a very healthy midrange surge of torque that is best taken advantage of by the six-speed gearbox.

2007 Honda Element

The 2007 Element is available in two versions, the LX and the EX. Both the Element LX and EX come equipped with the same 166-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine and new Drive-by-Wire electronic throttle control system, as well as a handy Maintenance Minder organizer whose name speaks for itself. Finally the new $15 million Acura Design Studio has officially opened its doors. The new studio is equipped with the latest design technologies and a work layout that focuses on improving collaboration. This new design studio will also represent the next step in the advancement of the Acura brand.

The studio is design to achieve a high level of energy efficiency and expected to become a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) building by the US Green Building Council or USGBC. There were various measures adopted for the design and construction of the studio with the aim of achieving LEED gold certification.

The vehicles to be exhibited by Honda at the 2007 Shanghai Auto Show come from the rich lineup of Honda’s advanced powertrain technologies. This is the automakers way of showing its contribution for the sustainable mobility in the Chinese automobile industry.

• Honda Civic Hybrid

• Honda FCX Concept, Honda’s new fuel-cell vehicle, and Honda’s experimental Home Energy Station, which would provide hydrogen home refueling.

• Honda Fit FFV, a Flexible Fuel Vehicle that can be operated on either 100% ethanol or a wide range of ethanol-gasoline fuel mixtures, which Honda has been producing and selling in Brazil since the end of 2006.

• Green Boat 2, the winning machine in the first Honda Econopower Race held in China in 2006, developed by a team from Tongji University, which drove 331.623 kilometers on one liter of gasoline. (In the Honda Econopower Race, participating teams compete based on the distance the vehicle can drive with one liter of gasoline. This is a race to challenge the limits of fuel efficiency.)

Also to be shown at the Shanghai Auto Show is the Acura Advanced Sports Car Concept which is going to be used as the basis for the next-generation sports car that will succeed the Acura NSX which by the way is also included in the display. Other Acura models included in the display are:

• Acura MDX which went on sale last April 13

• Acura RL and Acura TL

There is no doubt that these two sedans, or shall I say sports cars, are in different playing fields. The new and improved 2011 Ford Mustang is aimed to target fast, young and old drivers alike. The sports car is also geared towards men, not to discriminate against women who enjoy living on the edge as much as their counterpart. The Honda Accord Crosstour on the other hand was designed and targeted towards a much older crowd who enjoys a spacious a comfortable vehicle. Honda has recently debut its new “Neo-Urban” vehicle dubbed the Honda P-NUT at the Los Angeles Auto show. This vehicle of the future seats three passengers and features a center-driving configuration. The objective for the design of the vehicle was to explore the new type of small-segment vehicle. The vehicle, which is shaped like a Porsche 911, has a rear engine and rear-wheel drive. As of now the vehicle has no powerterrain but has the potential of becoming a plug-in hybrid or a small gasoline engine car.

The issue of safety still stands with the car. A driver can very easily find themselves with serious injuries if a collision were to occur, due to the solid sheet of glass that makes up both the windshield roofs. The dimensions of the vehicle are also particularly small considering safety standards, coming in at 133 inches long. The Honda P-NUT is a mere project made by the company to show just what cars will begin to look like 20 years from now. Although many would be waiting in line to purchase the Honda inspired “Personal-Neo Urban Transit” vehicle, we doubt this car will be up for sale any time soon. But don’t take our word for it just yet; you could be seeing this vehicle in your Miami neighborhood streets in the near future. The recent American Le Mans Series (AMLS) qualifying race that took place in Long Beach, California was a success for Acura Motorsports team.

For the first time, Acura earned its pole position during the qualifying race last Friday, thanks to Dario Franchitti who entered the race behind the steering wheel of the No. 26 XM Satellite Radio AGR Acura ARX-01a with Acura exhaust. Franchitti finished his last lap within one 1 minute and 11.838 seconds. Stefan Johansson, member of Highcroft Racing entered the qualifying race in the LP2M class aboard the Acura ARX-01a finished the race with qualifying time of 1:12.844, allowing him to obtain the fourth spot.

Meanwhile, Adrian Fernandez clocked in at 1:13.148, his best qualifying time in Long Beach. The Mexican driver took his No.15 Lowe’s Fernandez Acura Lola in the race.

Here is what the three Acura drivers said after the ALMS Long Beach qualifying race.

Dario Franchitti (No. 26 XM Satellite Radio AGR Acura ARX-01a): “I am getting used to the track with each run. It has been five years since I have run here. Trying to get a lap together is difficult with all of the traffic. But at the end I was able to get a pretty clean lap. Actually, I almost had to stop coming down for the final lap. So I was a little surprised by the time of the lap. But I knew I had a shot at the pole if I got a clear lap. It is very exciting to win Acura’s first pole. Bryan [Herta] has been waiting to come back here. When I jumped in the car this morning, Bryan tapped me on the helmet and said, `Hey, it’s Long Beach. Have fun!’ It is always great to race here. I hope we can put together a solid race and win here. Bryan and I have been trying to win here for many years. It would be a tre- mendous thrill to win at Long Beach. “

Adrian Fernandez (No. 15 Lowe’s Fernandez Acura Lola 06/40) “I hit a slower car that was coming out of the pits. I think it was the Mazda. But that car was going very slow. I clipped it and we had to come in and change the front nose. The new nose was dragging a little too much after we changed to it. I don’t think our car is too far off for the race. Luis [Diaz] and I have raced here previously, so I think we’ll have a competitive car for Saturday. It is great to race the Acura in the company’s backyard here in Southern California. We are very excited to be here.”

Stefan Johansson (No. 9 Highcroft Racing Acura ARX-01a, equipped with Acura exhaust system): “We are getting closer with the new Acura chassis. The engine feels good. I thought we had a chance to run a little quicker but we ran out of time. I really like being back and racing at Long Beach. It has been ten years or so for me. It took a little time to learn the new sections of the track and it is a little different with the ALMS car than the Champ Car. We had a couple of problems in practice this morning and, with the limited time here, that hurt us a bit. But we feel good about the race.”
