For the Acura teams making their debut in the American Le Mans Series, 2007 has been a challenging year. And the team is looking forward to etch a better name in ALMS endurance and sprint races.

Robert Clarke, the president of Santa Clarita-based Honda Performance Development, said that the on-track performances thus far have been superb despite only one win in seven races. Honda Performance Development produces and maintains the engines for the three Acura teams in the ALMS.

The Andretti Green Racing team, with Valencia’s Bryan Herta as one of its drivers, won the LMP2 portion of the season-opening 12 Hours of Sebring. The Acura teams have yet to win a race since, with the Porsches of Team Penske dominating the LMP2 division. But the Acura teams have been competitive, posting a number of podium finishes and beating the cars in the LMP1 division on a regular basis.

“Winning the first race at Sebring and that was quite an accomplishment for the new Acura program,” Robert Clarke said. “We would like to win another race this year. When you win the season opener, you feel that you can win some races. But we were realistic about the 2007 season. We weren’t looking for on-track results. This was a learning year for us with the Acura program and the three Acura teams. The Porsches are very fast. So it is tough.”

Herta and Adrian Fernandez, two of the team’s drivers, have tried racing at Road America. The ALMS race at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., will mark the eighth race of the 12-race season.

“At Road America, overall speed is important and I think we have the power to be very competitive,” Clarke said. “We are not really in the championship battle this year. Learning the series and sports car racing in general was the goal in 2007 for Acura.”

In previous races, Herta’s Andretti Green Racing team was not that competitive. Matter of fact, it is struggling. It may be tough for the manufacturer of Acura ball joints. In the most recent race at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Herta and teammate Marino Franchitti finished seventh, the Daily News reported.

“The XM Satellite Radio Acura team has not finished the last few races and with five races left, we have to finish them all,” said Herta. “Both the team and I have the chance to finish third in the championship and I think that would be an exceptional first year in the series, so that’s the goal. In order to do that, we have to finish races with no mistakes or reliability problems from here on out.”

Fernandez has 11 career starts at Road America in Champ Cars. He has three podium finishes in his career there, his best showing coming in 2000 when he was second, the report continued. “This is my favorite track. I love driving here,” Fernandez said. “The last time I competed at Elkhart was in 2003 in Champ Cars and I had a pretty good record going with three podiums. We had a great test here before the start of this season, and I have a lot of confidence for a strong finish in the race.”

At mid-Ohio, the Lowe’s Fernandez team had the highest-finishing Acura. It finished third. “We had a good car at Mid-Ohio and we were in position to run with the Porsches overall,” Fernandez said. “I have finished second and third there before, but I would love to win at that great track. I feel good about the Lowe’s Acura Lola.”

Honda’s luxury division Acura is not as popular as other luxury brands especially European ones. But the automaker is moving in the right direction by addressing the need for more quality vehicles by consumers.

The luxury brand has proven itself well in the past with Acura vehicles receiving praise and awards in the industry. Today, the automaker is on track to produce more quality vehicles which will propel them to the top of their class.

Already, Acura’s dealers in the United States are hyped up with the possibility of Acura competing directly with such brands as Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. These automakers, one being Japanese and the two others German, have been considered to be the leaders in the luxury market both in North America and other regions of the world.

The automaker promised a “big shift” to its dealers for next year. This shift is said to be geared towards catching up with the three most popular luxury brands. This means not only in terms of quality and reliability of their vehicles but also in its appeal to the consumer public. Ultimately, it will result in an increase of sale and production. It would be during that time that they can call themselves to be at the same level as Lexus or BMW or Mercedes-Benz.

Automotive News reported that in a meeting of Acura dealers in San Francisco, this is the message that was sent by Acura. The message is clear and hopefully for the automaker, their existing dealership base will help them in marketing the new vehicles that they will produce.

And indeed, Acura will be producing vehicles, new ones in the very near future. It is one of the promises given by the automaker to dealers. A new vehicle for every year is how the company aims to move closer to the tier 1 of luxury brands.

The automaker also announced that by next year, consumers and dealers alike will see a difference in Honda and Acura. As Lexus has been separated from Toyota, so will Acura be to Honda. This does not mean though that Honda will be letting Acura go. This means that there will be more distinction in Honda and Acura models.

Since Honda targets ordinary consumers, it is obvious that they will manufacture vehicles which almost everyone can afford. For Acura though, they have to focus on the upscale market, the consumers of which are those who can afford pricey vehicles.

If this promise by the automaker materializes, it is safe to say that more auto parts like Acura CL alternator will be mass produced. The automakers though have not yet announced whether they will be cutting production of some current models.

ClubCorp, the World Leader in Private Clubs, announced that Acura was going to be the title sponsor of two Acura ClubCorp Team Championships for the fourth year in a row. The team championships would be held in July and September, at Pinehurst in Pinehurst Village, North Carolina.

The event will witness 50 business clubs, sports clubs and societies with over 330 members participating at the2008 Team Championship from July 9 – 13. Another group of 440 members representing ClubCorp’s 80 country clubs and resorts will meet on Sept. 3 – 7.

The year 2010 will see Acura, the luxury vehicle division of Japanese automaker Honda Motor Company, adding another model to its luxury marque, as part of an effort to consolidate its image as a “tier 1 luxury brand.” Acura competes with Lexus, BMW and Infiniti in the luxury vehicle segment. The Acura brand was first launched in 1986 in the US, Canada, and Hong Kong and has been dynamic in establishing Honda’s reputation for performance vehicles in the American market.

Dan Bonawitz, vice president for corporate planning and logistics at American Honda Motor Co said, “We will have an all-new vehicle”. The future cars will take on close rivals such as BMW and Mercedes. News of an addition to Acura’s lineup has caused a buzz among Acura dealers, who are waiting for future Acura models to lead a recovery from dismal sales figures.
